This Extended adventure follows Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim Erebor with the help of Gandalf the Grey and 13 Dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the Goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities…A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Presented by Sammy Jay, Rare Books Specialist at Peter Harrington Rare Books – &
Folio (286 × 178 mm). Late 19th-century full grosgrain morocco in antique style by Hayes of Oxford, tooled in blind and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, wide turn-ins richly gilt, gilt edges. Housed in a morocco-backed folding case. Printed in black letter in two columns. Title page and separate title for “Romaunt of the Rose” within decorative border, woodcut of the Knight on B1r, woodcut of the Squire on E6v, woodcut initials throughout. Provenance: John Hawes (contemporary ownership inscription inked to title and colophon); Thomas A. Hendricks of Indianapolis (bookplate); Rosenbach Collection (typed label on printed header); Sylvain Brunschwig (morocco bookplate); Paul Peralta-Ramos (small Japanese-style inkstamp); the collection of Cornelia Funke, author of the Inkheart trilogy. Joints tender, lacking final blank, mild browning, dampstaining to first gathering and to margins of last gathering, head of B1 shaved just touching foliation, tear to f. 90 affecting a few letters of text, pen-trials to outer margin of f. 227, discreet ink doodles to woodcut of Knight, “Squier” inked to scroll on woodcut of same, last leaf coming away at head, overall a very good copy.
Fourth collected edition, one of four variants each with a different publisher’s name in the colophon: the others were Richard Kele, Thomas Petit, and Robert Toye. Pforzheimer notes that, to judge from the relative numbers of extant copies, it is probable that they shared equally in the edition. The woodcuts of the pilgrims that had first been printed in Caxton’s 1483 edition are here replaced by two new cuts, of The Knight and The Squire, which were then reprinted in later black letter editions through to 1602. The history of the woodcuts is traced by David R. Carlson, “Woodcut Illustrations of the Canterbury Tales, 1482–1602,” The Library, 6th ser., 19 (1997): 25–67.

Aristotle’s philosophical works covered an incredibly broad range of subjects including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, rhetoric, politics and government; constituting the first comprehensive system of Western Philosophy. Through these many branches, Aristotle sought the universal; his aim was to discover the essential nature of being, becoming, existence and reality which he believed could be achieved through detailed systems of logic and classification. Aristotle’s works on natural history, particularly observations of the sea-life visible from the island of Lesbos, are some of the earliest known to have survived and include one of the earliest classification systems. Aristotle’s Metaphysics is considered to be his principal work as well as the first major work in metaphysical philosophy itself. “It forms the highest step in Aristotle’s system, and deals with the first principles of all existence. Here he grapples with the deepest questions of philosophy” (Peck, 130). Translated by Thomas Taylor, a leading English classicist of the day. “In his knowledge of Plato and Aristotle he has never been equaled by any Englishman, and he is still the most important disseminator of ancient philosophy in the history of English and American literature” (Axon, 11).

The Road To Serfdom.
Hayek, F. A.
London: Routledge & Sons, 1944. First edition of one of the most influential and popular expositions of classical liberalism ever published. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by F.A. Hayek on the title page. Light rubbing, near fine in a very good dust jacket with some expert restoration. The British edition (which this copy is) was published in March of 1944, preceding its American counterpart, which was published later that same year in September. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare signed.
“Hayek has written one of the most important books of our generation. It restates for our time the issue between liberty and authority with the power and rigor of reasoning that John Stuart Mill stated in his great essay, ‘On Liberty’” (Hazlitt, 82). [I]n my opinion it is a grand book. . . . Morally and philosophically I find myself in agreement with virtually the whole of it: and not only in agreement with it, but in deeply moved agreement” (John Maynard Keynes). The Road To Serfdom placed fourth on the list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century by National Review magazine.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Edition 1 Color Denim blue
The new A35 aims to give younger buyers a more affordable entry point into AMG ownership, but is it any good?…
Mercedes doesn’t like to miss out on a gap in the market – think CLS and GLC Coupé, for example – and yet the German manufacturer hasn’t had an entry-level hot hatch on its books. Where Volkswagen has its Up, Polo and Golf GTIs, Audi has its S3 and BMW has its M140i, Mercedes has only been able to offer buyers the expensive A45 AMG.
Which is where the Mercedes-AMG A35 comes in. Conceived to offer greater performance than the front-wheel-drive A250, but at a price that sees it pitched well below the future A45, Mercedes hopes its entry-level hot hatch will hit the sweet spot for buyers both dynamically and financially.
Under its bonnet lies the same 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as used by the A250 – albeit revised to produce 302bhp and 295lb of torque – while drive is channelled through a heavily revised version of the 4Matic four-wheel drive system used by the first-generation A45.
If that sounds like a potent combination, you’d be right. Even on wet roads, the A35’s claimed 0-62mph time of just 4.7sec is never in doubt. Even out of first-gear hairpin bends, the A35 simply hooks up and goes, the four-wheel drive system putting all that power to the ground without a hint of wheelspin.
However, once you get onto some quicker, more open roads, it quickly becomes apparent that the A35 isn’t quite as effortlessly fast as you might first expect. Where rivals such as the S3 and M140i feel pretty rapid even low down in the rev range, the A35’s engine needs to be revved pretty hard to get the most from it, with peak power coming in at a relatively high 5800rpm. That means you have to drive it a bit like an old-school hot hatch, revving the crackers off it at every opportunity.
Now, this wouldn’t be frustrating if that top-end power unlocked a playful and agile chassis, but unfortunately that’s not quite the case. You see, although the A35 has accurate steering, fantastic body control and a keen front end, once you really up the pace you find that its chassis is set up to push wide at the front when the limit of adhesion is finally reached – and that’s even when you select the looser AMG Sport stability control mode, which in theory makes the four-wheel drive system keener to send power rearwards.
Granted, this neutral and predictable balance means that it is massively quick across country, but in terms of pure enjoyment, you’d get more from a Golf GTI or M140i.
2019 Mercedes-AMG A35 4Matic interior
Adding to the A-Class’s already spectacular cabin, the A35 gets plenty of go-faster touches such as a pair of AMG wing-backed sports seats, an AMG flat-bottomed steering wheel with touchpad controls and AMG-specific graphics for the digital instruments, including a Supersport mode with a large central rev counter.
If you add the optional AMG Track Pace Pack, you also get bespoke software as part of the MBUX infotainment system that permanently records data during track driving, enabling you to analyse a range of info such as acceleration, braking and lap times. It’s something we doubt any buyers will actually use, but like having a dive watch rated to 200m, it’s more about bragging rights than anything else.
In terms of practicality, the A35 remains virtually identical to the standard car. That means the Golf GTI and Audi S3 offer more space for your passengers and their luggage. For more in-depth info on the A35’s interior, visit the space and practicality section of our A-Class 16-point review.
